Rose d'Or International Television Festival – Dec. 31, 2008

Festival Director Urban Frye is very excited about launching the Rose d'Or Competition for 2009. The competition a reflection of the high quality of programming out there in the market place, but it also serves  to focus the attention on international trends and new initiatives.

Big Island Film Festival – Jan. 1, 2009

The Big Island Film Festival takes place from May 14–17, 2009. They are now accepting narrative films that must have been completed after January 1, 2008. Films made in Hawai‘i or by a Hawai‘i resident filmmaker will receive a 25% discount on their non-discounted entry fee.

TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund - Deadline Jan. 9, 2009

The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund will provide up to $170,000 in support of innovative and compelling filmmaking that explores scientific, mathematical, and technological themes and storylines, or a leading character who is a scientist, engineer, innovator or mathematician in fresh ways. They are seeking exceptional narrative work of all genres (except science fiction or fantasy) with scientifically accurate themes or characters. The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund is open to both established and emerging narrative filmmakers.

Ninth Annual Media That Matters Film Festival Call for Entries – Jan. 9, 2009

Media That Matters is the premier showcase for short films with big messages. Submit your short films, preferably under 12 minutes, but under 8 is even better. All genres (documentary, animation, PSA, narrative, music videos, etc.) are welcome.  The cash prize is $1,000 per film. All submission materials must be postmarked by January 9th, 2009.

SilverDocs – Jan. 9, 2009

SILVERDOCS seeks films that exhibit a personal cinematic vision and meet the highest standards of creative excellence and technical achievement. The Festival features 100 films, representing over 45 countries, and awards over $80,000 in cash and prizes. Documentaries should have been completed on or after March 2007, and not screened on television or theatrically in the US prior to the Festival.

BAVC Grants for Artists – Deadline Jan. 12, 2009

Applications are now available online for the 2009 Mediamaker Awards and the 2009 Producers Institute for New Media Technologies. BAVC's Mediamaker Awards are in-kind training and postproduction grants for independent artists with a particular focus on supporting emerging artists and under-served communities. The Producers Institute is intended to develop socially relevant media projects for emerging digital platforms.

Peabody Awards – Jan. 15, 2009

The Mass Communication at The University of Georgia and The Grady College of Journalism announces the Call for Entries for the 68th Annual George Foster Peabody Awards. Programs originally broadcast, cablecast or webcast during the 2008 calendar year (January 1 – December 31, 2008) are eligible for consideration for the 2008 presentation of the Peabody Awards.

NEH Grant – Jan. 21, 2009

The Division of Public Programs at the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities funds radio, television, and digital projects in the humanities that are intended for public audiences. Grants will support radio, television, and digital projects that offer multiple formats and use new technology to deliver humanities content.

MadCat Women's Film Festival Call For Submissions - Late Deadline Jan. 25

Every year, MadCat seeks to find and exhibit provocative and visionary works by women directors that are original in their use of the medium, and that challenge the use of sound and image while exploring notions of visual story telling. MadCat accepts films and video of all lengths and genres: experimental, narrative, documentary, animation, collage and whatever else you can think of. MadCat also accepts pieces produced in any year. The only parameter is that the films and videos are directed by or co-directed by women.

MadCat will open its call for submissions this September. Filmmakers must include an entry form for each film submitted. These forms will be available in September at madcatfilmfestival.org/submissions.html.

NEH America's Media Makers - Deadline Jan. 28

The Division of Public Programs at the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities funds radio, television, and digital projects in the humanities that are intended for public audiences. The division is currently accepting applications for development and production grants under the category of America's Media Makers. Upcoming deadlines are January 28, 2009, and August 2009 (exact date to be determined). Grants will support radio, television, and digital projects that offer multiple formats and use new technology to deliver humanities content.

Newport Beach Film Festival – Deadline Jan. 30

This Festival, less than an hour away from Hollywood, will host several premieres, galas and yacht parties for a singular festival experience. The 10th annual festival will run April 23rd - April 30, 2009.

Cine Las Americas International Film Festival – Deadline Jan. 30

Cine Las Americas announces The 12th Cine Las Americas International Film Festival. The festival will take place May 7 - 14, 2009 in Austin, Texas, once again bringing the best of Latino and indigenous cinema. The festival showcases contemporary films from North, Central, South America the Caribbean and Spain. Works made by or about Latinos and native groups of the Americas are eligible to participate. As a celebration of young filmmakers, Cine Las Americas presents Emergencia, a special competitive section open to filmmakers ages 19 and under. National Film Festival for Talented Youth – Deadline Jan. 30

NFFTY (pronounced nifty) is one of the largest youth film festivals in the country and includes juried screenings of over 75 youth-made films in a state-of-the-art theater, filmmaking workshops and panels, and a gala opening night. Submissions are open to any filmmaker 22 years old or younger. Any length or genre. NFFTY 09 will be held April 24-26 in Seattle, Washington. The final deadline for submissions is January 30th.

The Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award - Deadline Jan. 31

From the Top and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation share a passion for helping exceptional young people reach their potential in all areas of their lives. The goal of the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award Program is to identify and nurture talented young musicians whose lack of financial resources might otherwise impede their progress. This year From the Top will select twenty-five $10,000 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award recipients ages 8-18.

14th Native American Film & Video Festival - Viewing March 26-29

On March 26 – 29, 2009, the Film and Video Center of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) will present its 14th Native American Film +  Video Festival in New York City. We are delighted to announce that WEAVING WORLDS  has been selected for inclusion from among more than 400 works submitted, chosen by a team of FVC program staff and guest selectors. Filmmakers and cultural activists Nanobah Becker (Navajo), Chris Eyre (Cheyenne/Arapaho), Fred Rickard (Cree) and Zezinho Yube (Kaxinawa), with Jesús Avirama (Kokonuco) providing additional Latin American selection assistance, are this festival’s selectors.

Native Arts at NEFA / Native Artist Exchange - National Travel Fund

The Native Artist Exchange provides support for Native artists residing in any of the 50 United States to travel to different regions of the country so that they may exchange artistic knowledge and skills. This fund is designed to encourage and assist American Indian, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian artists, and provides an opportunity for Native artists to teach, learn, and collaborate in traditional or contemporary Native art forms through travel from one region to another across the nation.

Travel grants will be awarded up to $1500 based on review of detailed requests and budgets appropriate to the scope of travel.  Applicants may receive one travel grant per fiscal year.  Requests must be received by NEFA no later than two calendar months prior to the departure date of the proposed trip.
